Better Groundwater Management in Waterloo Region

Water Uncertainty to Water Security with Dr. Hugh Simpson

For ages 18+.

Waterloo Region has been blessed with an abundant supply of groundwater, one that literally lies beneath our feet, which has supported a diverse and vibrant community. A challenge with a groundwater source that is out of sight is that it is often out of mind, and we forget to manage and protect it adequately. This presentation will look at some reasons why our local groundwater management approach has contributed to our water uncertainty and explore some opportunities for our community to better manage our groundwater resource and move towards greater water security.

About Dr. Hugh Simpson
Dr. Hugh Simpson is a Principal Investigator and Senior Research Scientist with the Morwick G360 Groundwater Research Institute at the University of Guelph. Hugh is also a research consultant with Grounded Collaborative Services. Hugh is a Professional Geoscientist and has more than 30 years of experience working in provincial and regional municipal government focusing on the management and protection of groundwater resources.

His current research and practice concern collaborative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to complex problem-solving concerning groundwater management and protection involving the diverse communities and their interests in agricultural and rural settings. This reflects his broader interest in promoting the involvement of communities in groundwater management and protection in the context of the emerging field of Socio-Hydrogeology.

He served as a subject matter expert concerning groundwater and private water system policy and program efforts throughout Ontario, including leading Source Protection Planning activities and private water well best management practices knowledge translation and transfer, with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs from 2000 through 2022. He provided technical review and guidance concerning private and public water and wastewater initiatives and coordinated the private-municipal water well interference program, to better manage and protect local groundwater resource throughout rural portions of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo from 1992 to 2000.
